Cafe Britt Tours

The largest coffee producer in the country, Cafe Britt has put together a very professional tour that walks you through the various stages of coffee production on their working plantation. In addition to seeing the milling and roasting processes, visitors try tasting and watch skits performed by professional actors on the history of coffee.

Classic Coffee Tour (9am and 3pm, 2 hours) - $26 adults/$22 children (6-12). Includes transportation, bilingual guide, and coffee field visit and samplings.

Cappuccino Coffee Tour (11am, 2 hours) - $34 adults/$30 children (6-12). Includes transportation, bilingual guide, Costa Rican wedding party feast (skit), live multimedia barista show, and a buffet-style lunch at the on-site Don Prospero Restaurant.

La Paz Waterfall Garden Tour

This is an excellent tour to a park in a cloud forest. The 3.5km trails lead you to five waterfalls - including one you can stand underneath (a truly incredible experience). There is also the largest butterfly garden in the world, an orchid garden and a hummingbird garden, where hundreds of tiny birds zip mere centimeters from you! The restaurant offers up excellent traditional foods and the surrounding gardens are full of native species.

The Butterfly Farm

Opened in 1983 as the first commercial butterfly farm in Latin America, this operation is now the second-largest exporter of pupae in the world. The two-hour tour walks visitors through the short but fascinating lives of butterflies. Best time to visit is early in the morning on a sunny day as this is when the mini art-canvases on wings are most active.

You will run a total of 27 kilometers of Class III–IV rapids exploring this magnificent river valley. The Pacuare leads you through virgin rainforest, cascading waterfalls and river carved canyons. You maneuver through exhilarating rapids and observe the intricacies of the rainforest at the river’s edge. Along the way you take time-out to have lunch on the shores of the river. 2-day Pacuare River Whitewater Rafting Tour - $250 per person (min 2 pax).

Day 1 -The day begins with a scenic drive along the foothills of the Irazú and Turrialba volcanoes to the ‘put-in’ on the Pacuare River for your two day whitewater adventure. You will run a total of 27 kilometers of Class III–IV rapids exploring this magnificent river valley. This afternoon we arrive at our comfortable riverside camp, “El Nido del Tigre”. Nestled between the sounds of the rainforest and the hum of the river, take time to explore this lush environment first hand by taking trails through the forest to spectacular waterfalls. Day 2 - Today the Pacuare leads you through virgin rainforest, cascading waterfalls and river carved canyons. 1-Day Mountain-biking Tour (Irazu Volcano/Orosi Valley) - $85 per person

Begin with a scenic drive up to the Irazú volcano. After a hike around the lunar like crater you begin the mountain bike descent down the agriculturally rich slopes of the Volcano. The route goes through several communities and has a nice mixture of paved and dirt roads. There is plenty of time for stops along the way to enjoy the vistas of the Orosi Valley below. Lunch is along the way and you continue through coffee plantations alongside Lake Cachí. The ride ends in the village of Orosi where you load up and return to San Jose. Includes round-trip transportation, lunch, all necessary equipment, and professional, bilingual and friendly guides, entrance to Irazu National Park.
2-Day Mountain-biking Tour (San Jose-Manuel Antonio, Quepos) - $250 per person (min 2 pax)

Day 1 - You drive out of San Jose up to Cerro de la Muerte at an altitude of 2,330 meters, high on the Continental Divide. You start our day with a 14km descent on a rarely traveled gravel road (there is a paved alternative route for those who prefer it). After a hilly section passing through the rich farming and coffee communities of Santa Maria and San Marcos, you leave the pavement and continue your trek on dirt roads towards the Pacific Coast. You have two routes to choose from depending on the weather, one involves an overnight in a local hotel, while the other is a camping night. The campsite sits high on a mountain with a panoramic view of the valley.

Day 2 - Your second day of biking takes you through the sparsely populated and incredibly scenic Pacific slopes, a raucous and exhilarating downhill ride to the coastal plain, through a remote area of thick forest and isolated farms. Out of the hills, you cross the river at Paso Real and push on to the white sand beaches of Manuel Antonio. You arrive in time for a well deserved dunking in the hotel pool or plunge in the surf at the beach. Includes transportation from hotel, all meals except dinner on last day, accommodation, all necessary equipment, and professional, bilingual and friendly guides. 1 Day Hiking/Rock-climbing/Rappelling Tour (Pico Blanco) - $75 per person (min. 4 pax)

Pico Blanco, a 2,200-meter mountain peak above the city of San José is your destination. The adventure begins with an early morning departure from the city as you head up into the Central Valley Mountain range. After a short drive from San Jose, you trade motor power for hiking boots, and continue your trek to the summit. The journey to the top entails hiking through mist-covered cloud forest, scrambling over rocks and underbrush and technical climbing up rock faces. The reward at the top is an awesome view and a well-deserved picnic lunch. After lunch, you begin the equally exciting descent, the highlight of which is rappelling a 50-foot stone cliff. The Colorado River is a narrow river where you will pass through canyon walls as you experience water rapids, lush vegetation, wildlife and pristine isolation. Hiking trough the Rincon de la Vieja National Park is a great experience for the entire family. The natural hydrologic system of Palo Verde is home to one of the most important concentrations of birds in the country and in Central America. This full day expedition features a guided visit to Monteverde Cloud Forest, located on the Tilarán mountain range. Upon arrival, join your guide for a nature walk through the cloud forest, with several different life zones that are characterized by different types of plants and animals.  Within this area are more than 2,000 species of plants, 400 species of birds, and 100 different species of mammals. Afterwards, enjoy lunch previous to a visit to the Sky Walk, which is a complex of suspended bridges, platforms and paths, built within the Cloud Forest.  This allows the observation of flora and fauna from ground level all the way to the top of the trees. Visit the cloud forest atop the Tilaran Mountain Range.  The town of Monteverde was founded in the early ‘50s by a group of Quakers who settled there and began producing milk and fine cheeses.  Today Monteverde comprises nearly 30,000 hectares of protected areas, including the Children’s Eternal Rainforest, Santa Elena and Monteverde Cloud Forest.  Excellent for birdwatchers and for spotting many endemic species.  The Sky Walk of suspended bridges in the canopy of the forest is a walk of a lifetime!  Includes trained bilingual guides, round-trip transportation, entrance fees, and lunch.

This 4,700 hectare reserve forms an oasis for wildlife from a large surrounding area.  Carara offers a rich biodiversity due to its transitional position between the dry northern forest and the humid tropical forests of the south.  Carara has fauna and flora from both ecosystems and a virgin forest that covers most of the park.  This reserve is known for its abundant birds and also for being one of the last habitats in Costa Rica of the Scarlet Macaw. Close to Carara is the Tarcoles River, home to a wide variety of birds and crocodiles.  A trip down stream will show you the Guacalillo Mangrove, nesting place for the Scarlet Macaw and on both sides of the river bank you will see numerous species of birds such as pelicans, ospreys, frigates and trogons.  The crocodiles are spectacular – some measuring up to 23-feet long.  Includes bilingual guide and round-trip transportation.

Arenal lay dormant until July 1968 when an earthquake shook the area and 12 hours later Arenal blew.  If you have never seen an active volcano Arenal makes for a spectacular first.  This 1,633 meter volcano rises majestically out of the lush pastures and forest on the eastern end of Lake Arenal.  Intermittent explosions draw people both day and night.  Even when overcast the rumblings, vending and molten lava glowing through the clouds offers a very special experience.  You will also enjoy the hot springs with a view of the volcano.  Park is closed on Mondays. This full day trip to Isla Tortuga (Turtle Island) in the Gulf of Nicoya is one of the most popular tours in Costa Rica. The tour begins with a land transfer to Sierpe and then a 90-minute boat ride through one of the largest mangroves in Central America to the Caño Island.  The mangroves are inhabited by crocodiles, snakes, four species of monkeys, and a great variety of birds. You will then boat past Drake Bay and the Marenco Biological Reserve, with the possibility of viewing Humpback, Pilot and Killer Whales along the way.  At the park a bilingual naturalist guide will lead you on a 3-hour walking tour of pristine primary forest. The hike ends at the Rangers Station with a delicious picnic lunch.

Snorkeling and Kayak at Marino Ballena Park – $65 per person
You will launch your kayak at Playa Piñuelas, a short 30-minute drive from Dominical.  Aside from exuberant flora and fauna you will also see breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. Our bilingual guides will tell you all about the park's history and teach you important safety techniques.  An easy 1½ hour paddle will bring you to Ballena Island where a lunch of fruit and cold drinks in tropical style will be provided. You will then snorkel around the island, observing the richest marine fauna in the area. Or, if you prefer, you may choose to simply relax on the island and explore the numerous caves.

Before the active period of 1968, a lavish canopy of vegetation covered the Arenal Volcano. People that climbed Arenal’ s summit related that inside the crater there were big trees and at night, they slept in places where there was some heat due to small steam outlets. Right now the green area is located at the east side of the Mountain, and other little green parts can be seen on the north and the south of the volcano.  The Hike begins on the active side of the volcano that takes you through the forest over recent lava flows and to the destroyed area now in the process of regeneration. Mountain Biking (4 hours) - $59 per person
This is one of the tours we offer for those who want to go on a bike trip to the area where the forest, the Arenal Volcano and the Lake meet and leads trough a beautiful trail. The tour starts from the Arenal Lake Dam, where we take an old trail into the forest. At the end of the trail we will arrive at the entrance of the Arenal Volcano National Park and then move on to the Observatory and back to the main road. Venado Caves (4 hours) - $48 per person
This tour leaves from La Fortuna at 8: 00 a.m. for one-hour transfer to the Venado Village. The caves were formed during the Miocene period, 15 or 20 million years ago. For many years they were under sea level and due to tectonic movements they surfaced. The Guatuzos aborigines discovered the caves. Limestone rocks, stalactites, stalagmites and corals, form most of the caves. Maleku Indigenous Reserve (5 hours) - $83 per person
