When local residents of Manuel Antonio heard of Evelyn and David’s plans to install underground cables and wiring, a gray water recycling treatment plant for irrigation, a waste treatment plant, and outdoor solar lighting, they said the concept reminded them of documentaries they’d seen on the Discovery Channel and began calling the project “The Discovery House.”
About the Owners:
Evelyn and David have traveled extensively for 30 years. Their interest in primates led them to work with Dr. Dian Fossey in Rwanda photographing and videotaping endangered mountain gorillas. They raised funds and hired anti-poaching patrols to help protect the gorillas. They also worked with Dr. Biruté Galdikas on the Orangutan Project in Borneo where they photographed and videotaped the red apes, gathered data, and helped rehabilitate former pet orangutans back to the wild. They produced a documentary, "Orangutans: Grasping the Last Branch," for the Orangutan Foundation International. Evelyn then wrote a children's book, Among the Orangutans, and undertook a worldwide speaking tour to more than 500 schools to raise awareness and involve children in a campaign to help to save critically threatened primates and their endangered habitats.
It was a natural progression that the couple’s interest in helping endangered primates would bring them to Manuel Antonio where this small community is striving to save the Red-backed Squirrel Monkey, the most endangered primate in Central America. Evelyn and David are the USA West Coast Representatives for the International Primate Protection League, and members of Orangutan Foundation International and the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund.
