The March House
March House has the most spacious and comfortable accommodations in Mal Pais, or this side of Costa Rica. It is secluded, private, and great for anyone wishing for discreet or anonymous travelling. The styling of March House is as minimal as possible, not distracting from decor, but harmonious with the tranquil world just outside, serving as an escape from big-city lives, and a sanctuary for docile relaxation and meditation.

This luxury rental beach house boasts five distinct, separate bedrooms with built-in fixtures, ceiling fans, large closets, and intimate baths. Hand-carved, louvered doors open each room wide to the tropical flora, warm sun, and undulating surf, blurring the line between inside and out. Read a book on the daybed outside your room, soak in a bath while watching the sunset, or enjoy dinner with friends. At March House, no one has to know you are here, unless you want them to.

Anyone that has been to Mal Pais, Costa Rica, can tell you about the profound calmness and overwhelming sense of serenity that exudes here. It is innate to the land, fed by the scent of flor blanca, softly chirping parrots, and smooth rhythms of the Pacific Ocean. Even Costa Rican Tico's claim Mal Pais to be among paradise, despite the literal translation of "Bad Place". There simply is a soothing calm in the air that you can readily feel, and it stays with you when you return home.

March House channels that feeling of serenity. With the subtle balance of man-made and natural materials, the house meets Mother Nature in a warm handshake. The open walls blur where inside and outside meet. The fine lines of the concrete facade and steps, counter the lush grass and leafy trees. The rounded door handles and silent ceiling fans reflect the softness of air coming in off the beach. Even the hues of March House reflect the tones of the environment.

Throughout popular resort areas in Costa Rica such as Tamarindoor nearby Santa Teresa, you may find many resorts and developments that severely altered the land or cleared jungle brush to suit their building needs. Not here. At March House, we lament the one dying tree that had to be removed. But that was all; just one quite sick mango tree was cleared.

March House architect, San Jose native Max Teran Gonzalez, realized that the natural placement of existing trees and plants on our property could never be equally duplicated with landscaping efforts. And the goal was to merge the house with the land in a synergistic way, without drastically changing the surroundings, or clear-cutting. He even purposely placed March House a little further from the beach, so that the space from home to trees to beach is perfectly balanced in a way only nature could have inspired.

Max believes in building smart and utilizing tried and tested methods in his designs. His use of simple ideas such as natural airflow cooling instead of electrical air conditioning not only bodes well for the environment, but also positions the home as a natural part of the environment, blending in and embracing the beautiful setting. That's also why you will find no glass windows at March House. Instead, each room has hand-carved louvered doors, which swing open the full length of the walls, so that interior and exterior are only vaguely defined.

March House's standard of style that Max developed is unequalled by any of the local surf shacks or over crowded resorts. The design of March House as a sanctuary, introduced to Mal Pais the idea of embracing the land not just as a surfing spot, but as a Zen moment in time, lazily observed from a perch of quiet, private luxury. It's creation is a success for eco design in Costa Rica, and as a destination for the sophisticated traveller.
